An Atom Bomb for Christmas

On 9th May 2000 Adrian Bishop flew Hastings WJ333 of 99 Squadron 'westabout' to transport nuclear material for Operation Grapple to Christmas Island [CI] for Britains A-Bomb Tests, Adrian's task was to take WJ333 as far as Travis AFB in the USA where a second crew would continue the journey to CI, a Group Captain would accompany the load 'armed' with a Geiger Counter checking for radiation leaks. Four servicemen accompanied the load 'unaware' of the load! One of the four was a B J Mills who I exchanged emails with a few years ago, I must look to see if I still have those lurking in one of dozens of folders I have on the Hastings aircraft..............smile

The article written by Adrian Bishop appeared in the Flypast magazine in December 2000
