Life with the Handley Page Hastings usually meant a 24/7/365 lifestyle, can you share your experiences

1960 Memory of RAF Idris

Mike Sawbridge and I were lowly second pilots on the Hastings and we were feeling very hard done by having been cheated out of our Hunter postings.
Our first overseas trip from the OCU at RAF Dishforth was to RAF Idris, Libya . As lowly second pilots we did not have much to do on our nightstop . After landing at Idris we repaired to the bar with the crew, as one did. When the bar closed, Mike and I took our drinks out onto the mess patio, where the palm trees swayed in the balmy tropical breeze and the inky black sky was studded with silver stars.

It was at this very moment that we both decided that perhaps this transport flying malarkey was not so bad after all!
