This really was a very close shave involving Field Marshal Sir Gerald Templer and other VIP's aboard Hastings WD500 on 4th July 1956
The passenger door on a C4 is/was totally different to all other Hastings, it was hydraulically operated with steps in situ [I have some photos to find yet from WJ326], somehow in flight the door became detached together with the steps, the door then became attached to the port tailplanes leading edge, control of the aircraft was extremely difficult, the pilot and flight engineer worked wonders to halt or reduce the porpoise effect of the aircraft.
On approach to an emergency landing [Turkey??], speed was reduced where the door detached itself from the port tailplane and the aircraft landed safely, I will contact Tony Hawes who has a newspaper clipping of the incident
